Adult Outreach/Social Action

Our parish provides numerous service opportunities for our parishioners to help those less fortunate.

If you are interested in participating in any of these outreach programs, please contact the parish office at (914) 725-2755 (or spx@spxny.org) or click on this link.

Baby Shower Outreach
Each May, parishioners donate new or gently used newborn and children’s (up to age three) clothing and bedding, formula, diapers, baby powder/lotions as well as new or gently used maternity clothing, lamps, twin bedding sets, Carnation Instant Milk, Parmalat, cans of tuna or salmon, bathrobes, slippers, towels, toiletries and framed pictures of inspirational sayings for Good Counsel Homes and the Sharing Shelf. Donations are left in the donation closet in the Narthex.

Volunteers coordinate with Good Counsel Homes and the Sharing Shelf and assist with publicity.

Bag 2 School Program
Each August, parishioners donate funds for the purchase of backpacks and school supplies for low-income children and teens in Westchester County.

Blood Drive
Twice  each year, parishioners have the opportunity to donate blood through the New York Blood Center before or after Sunday Mass.

Christmas

Adopt a Family
In December, parishioners have an opportunity to adopt a family identified by various organizations that lacks the financial ability to exchange Christmas gifts.

Parishioners can adopt a family alone or with other parishioners, purchase items on a list provided by the family (often gift certificates or clothing as well as one or two toys for children), wrap the items and deliver them to the school lobby. Parishioners also can donate a special meal (usually a canned ham along with the fixings and dessert). Volunteers deliver the items to the selected organizations.

Angel Giving Tree
Each December, our parishioners purchase new gifts (no violent toys or games) for less fortunate children, wrap them, mark them with “BOY” or “GIRL” and the appropriate age of the child (between 2 and 12 years old), place the gifts under the “Angel Tree, and put an “Angel” on the “Angel Tree.” Our Confirmation candidates pack the gifts for transport to selected organizations serving the needy.

St. Patrick’s Nursing Home Wish List
Each December, parishioners donate new, unwrapped Christmas gifts (e.g., sweaters, socks, wallets, change purses, watches, calendars, crafts, etc.) for nursing home patients at St. Patrick’s Nursing Home in the Bronx.

Volunteers help coordinate with St. Patrick’s Nursing Home, assist with publicity, purchase gifts, and/or deliver gifts to St. Patrick’s Nursing Home in the Bronx.

Coat Drive
In October, parishioners have an opportunity to donate clean coats and jackets in good condition to the needy. Volunteers sort the coats and jackets left in the school lobby and/or deliver them to selected organizations.

Lenten Food Drive
Each Lent, our children bring non-perishable food items to the altar during the 10:30 am Family Mass. In addition, our parish provides bags with a list of the most needed foods (e.g., canned tuna or meat, one lb. boxes of rice, small sacks of flour, boxed mashed potatoes, powdered milk, canned fruit or vegetables, hot and cold cereals, dried fruit, dried or canned beans, soups, pasta, Jello or pudding mixes, coffee/tea, drink mixes, canned sauces or other non-perishable foods in unbreakable unopened containers) for the food pantry benefiting St. Peter’s/St. Denis’ Church in Yonkers.

Volunteers help coordinate with St. Peter’s/St. Denis’ food pantry, assist with publicity, purchase food items to fill the paper bags and place the bags in the donation closet in the Narthex for pick up by the food pantry. Donations also can be made to the food pantry by mailing a check payable to “St. Peter’s/St. Denis’ Food Pantry” to the Rectory.

Lifting Up Westchester
Each Spring, parishioners assemble Easter/Spring baskets for homeless youngsters through Lifting Up Westchester, a nonprofit that provides support to those who have lost their housing or are struggling to meet other basic needs.

Move with Purpose
Each June, our parishioners are invited to participate in outside fitness classes and children’s programming on the field along with music and food trucks for refreshments to benefit Feeding Westchester, an organization dedicated to assisting in the fight against hunger.

New York Foundling
Volunteers assemble gift baskets filled with snacks, books and games for persons with developmental disabilities at The New York Foundling, an organization that helps persons in need through services, support and advocacy.

Pastoral Care
The Ministry of Pastoral Care seeks to integrate the sick as well as homebound or hospitalized parishioners of the Church of Saint Pius X into the spiritual community and address their needs.

Pastoral Care Ministers visit sick, elderly, homebound or hospitalized parishioners, provide dinner or care packages and/or provide transportation to Mass and medical appointments. Homebound Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to parishioners who are homebound and visit The Ambassador of Scarsdale to pray with, and distribute Holy Communion to its residents. The schedule is flexible and determined by need.

Any adult Catholic who has received the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation) who wishes to serve and is comfortable bringing Communion to the sick and/or elderly will be trained.

Seminarian Support
Parishioners provide financial assistance to young men who are studying to become priests in the Philippines with the Alagad ni Maria.

Sharing Shelf of Westchester
Our volunteers collect toiletries and other donations including clothing to assist low-income children and teens in Westchester County. (See also Youth Ministry for Sharing Shelf activities.)

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Each November, parishioners donate food for Thanksgiving dinner to those less fortunate.

Volunteers help coordinate with St. Peter’s/St. Denis’ food pantry, assist with publicity, purchase frozen turkeys, large frozen chickens and/or the “trimmings” for Thanksgiving dinner, help load cars and/or deliver food after the 12:00 pm Mass on the Sunday before Thanksgiving to St. Peter’s/St. Denis’ Church in Yonkers. Donations to the food drive also can be made by mailing a check payable to “St. Peter’s/St. Denis’ Food Pantry” to the Rectory.

Thread for Life
Volunteers meet on the 4th Thursday of each month to knit and crochet items for the needy. Please see the Bulletin for details.

Weekly Food Pantry
On a weekly basis throughout the year, parishioners donate food (e.g., boxes of cereal, pasta, canned meats, canned vegetables, rice, instant potatoes, canned soups, etc.) to the working poor who are struggling to put food on their tables throughout the year.

Volunteers help coordinate with St. Peter’s/St. Denis’ food pantry, assist with publicity, purchase food items and place the food items in the donation closet in the Narthex. Parishioners can also donate to the food pantry by mailing a check payable to “St. Peter’s/St. Denis’ Food Pantry” to the Rectory.
